COUPLE COMMUNICATION --  From the Mouth of a Child

Over the years, we at ICP have heard COUPLE COMMUNICATION (CC) instructors tell about how a couple has been impacted by taking the program. Recently, Dr. Jean Moretto, one of our Certified CC Instructors in the St. Louis area, shared a letter she received from a five-year old child whose parents had been in a CC class.

Jean and two other Certified CC Instructors (Rev. Janis Bean and Kelly Carney) co-teach a weekend class. These instructors use the 2007 revised CC materials, in which the workbook is Collaborative Marriage Skills. The “Styles of Communication” section is upfront in the book; the “Mapping Issues” process” comes last.

Jean said that the class held many great moments. Before the class, the particular couple, whose child wrote the letter, was ready to separate. During the mapping process, their issue was deciding where to go for a weekend away – lots of tears and laughter. The letter follows:

Dr. Jean,
You do not know me, but you know my mommy and daddy. They probably have told you about me, I sometimes am bad and get in trouble and that makes them holler. Saturday you had a special magical meeting they went to. Since then, they have not hollered at me or my sister or at each other. They spend a lot of time talking and dancing on a flower rug and a square rug. Sometimes when they are on the rugs they cry or hug each other or sit on the rugs and hold hands and talk. We sure are using a lot of tissue. They tell me and my sister they will teach us how to dance on the rugs. I hope I don't cry and hug as much as they do.

I asked my grandma to help me write this because I cannot spell very good. I want to thank you for sprinkling them with magic powder. Your magic wand is really good. Can my sister and me call you our fairy godmother? I will try to keep being good so I do not break the magic. I told my grandma that I don't know what I am doing different and she says I am not doing anything different but that I should just be happy my mommy and daddy are not hollering anymore. Do you think they will start hugging me and my sister too?

I hope it is ok for me to say I love you cause I do. Maybe someday we can meet each other. Do you have a glass carriage with real horses? What color is your wand? I bet your dress is sparkly white.
